Choosing a Shopify theme in 2026: free vs. paid vs. custom
Which Shopify theme fits your store? A practical guide to choosing between free, paid and custom themes — including concrete recommendations per situation.
The theme is the foundation of your Shopify store. It determines how your store looks, how fast it loads and how much you can customise without needing a developer. But with more than 150 themes in the official Shopify Theme Store — plus thousands of external options — the choice is overwhelming.
In this article I explain what the differences are and which choice best fits which situation.
Three categories
1. Free themes
Shopify currently offers 12 free themes, of which Dawn is the most widely used. Dawn is fast, well-maintained by Shopify itself, and contains most of the features a standard webshop needs.
When a free theme works:
- You’re just starting and want to validate your concept
- You have a simple catalogue (fewer than 50 products)
- You have no specific design requirements
- You want to go live as quickly as possible
Free themes to consider:
- Dawn — clean, fast, good for fashion and lifestyle
- Sense — airy design, good for beauty and cosmetics
- Craft — warm feel, good for handmade products
- Refresh — modern, good for electronics and tech
2. Paid themes
Paid themes cost a one-off €150–€380. They typically offer more sections, more advanced product display, better filtering and a more unique design than the free alternatives.
When a paid theme is worth it:
- You want a more professional look without custom development
- You need specific features (such as quickview, mega-menu, product filters)
- Your competitor uses the same free theme and you want to stand out
Popular paid themes:
- Impulse — powerful for large catalogues with filtering
- Prestige — luxury look, perfect for premium brands
- Pipeline — minimalist, conversion-first design
- Warehouse — for stores with large product numbers
Note: paid themes aren’t always actively maintained. Check the update history in the Theme Store before buying.
3. Custom themes
A custom theme is built entirely from scratch. This is what we do at Web Builders for most clients: we start from your brand, your products and your conversion goals.
When custom is the right choice:
- You want a unique look that fully aligns with your brand identity
- You have specific functional requirements that standard themes don’t offer
- You want maximum performance (no unnecessary code from a generic theme)
- You’re on a serious budget and want to be able to grow long-term
A custom theme is an investment — but also gives you full control and no compromises.
Technical criteria to check
Regardless of which theme you choose, always check:
Load speed: Test the theme in PageSpeed Insights on a demo store. Scores below 70 (mobile) are a red flag. Every extra second of load time costs you conversion.
Mobile-first: More than 65% of your visitors come on mobile. Check the mobile view extensively, not just the desktop preview.
Section support: How many customisations can you make yourself via the theme editor? More sections and blocks available means more flexibility without a developer.
Accessibility: Keyboard navigation, colour contrast, alt text support. This affects both users and SEO.
The theme and SEO
Shopify themes have a big impact on your SEO performance. Key points:
- Load speed is a ranking factor — don’t choose a theme full of animations and heavy JavaScript
- Schema markup (structured data) needs to be built in for product rich snippets
- Clean HTML structure with correct H1/H2 hierarchy
In our Shopify SEO service we go further into how to get the most out of your technical setup.
My recommendation per situation
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Validating / starting out | Dawn (free) |
| Professional start, limited budget | Paid theme €150–€380 |
| Serious store, own brand | Custom theme |
| Large catalogue + filtering needed | Impulse or Warehouse |
| Premium brand, luxury look | Prestige or custom |
Choosing a theme is one thing — configuring it properly, making it conversion-ready and connecting all your tools is another. That’s where Web Builders makes the difference.
