Shopify agency or Shopify specialist? What fits your project?
What is the difference between a Shopify agency and a Shopify specialist? And which do you choose for your store? An honest overview of costs, approach and when you need which.
When you’re looking for someone to build your Shopify store, you quickly encounter two types of providers: Shopify agencies and Shopify specialists. Both can deliver excellent work — but they operate very differently, and for most SME entrepreneurs that choice makes a big difference in price, speed and collaboration.
In this article I explain the difference honestly. Including the situations where an agency is the better choice, and when you’re better served by a specialist.
What is a Shopify agency?
A Shopify agency is a firm with multiple employees: designers, developers, project managers, sometimes marketers as well. They work on multiple projects simultaneously and typically have fixed processes and templates for larger engagements.
Advantages of an agency:
- More capacity for large or complex projects
- Internal specialisations (design, development, marketing separated)
- Formal contracts, SLAs and account management
- Scalable for multiple stores or international rollout
Disadvantages:
- Higher costs due to overhead (office, management, sales)
- More links in the communication chain — you rarely talk to the person doing the building
- Less personal attention for smaller projects
- Projects take longer due to internal coordination
A Shopify agency is the right choice if you’re building a complex platform with multiple markets, integrations with custom ERP systems, or if you have an internal IT team that needs a permanent partner for long-term collaboration.
What is a Shopify specialist?
A Shopify specialist is an experienced freelancer or independent professional who has fully specialised in Shopify. Not a generalist who “also does WordPress and Webflow” — but someone who works with Shopify every day and knows the platform inside out.
Advantages of a specialist:
- You always talk directly with the person building your store
- Lower overhead = lower cost for comparable quality
- Faster turnaround due to less internal coordination
- Personal involvement in your project and brand
- Direct access to real expertise, no sales pitches
Disadvantages:
- Less capacity for very large or multiple parallel projects
- Dependent on one person (availability, holidays)
- Less formal structure than an agency
A Shopify specialist is the right choice for SME entrepreneurs who want a professional webshop without agency prices and without waiting three weeks for a reply from a project manager.
The honest cost comparison
A Shopify agency charges anywhere from €5,000 to €20,000+ for a webshop — partly justified by the complexity they handle, partly by overhead.
An experienced Shopify specialist delivers comparable quality for €1,500 to €5,000, depending on the scope of the project. See our Shopify pricing for a concrete overview.
The difference isn’t in the quality of the work — it’s in the structure around it.
When to choose which?

|---|---|---|

| Migration from WooCommerce to Shopify | ✓ | |
| Shopify B2B with company accounts | ✓ | |
| International rollout, 5+ markets | ✓ | |
| Custom ERP integration (SAP, AFAS) | ✓ | |
| Quick launch, fixed price, personal contact | ✓ | |
| Enterprise with internal IT team | ✓ |
What makes Web Builders different?
Web Builders is not an agency — I’m an independent Shopify specialist who has consciously chosen focus over scale. That means:
- You always talk directly with me, not with a project manager
- I build exclusively on Shopify — no WordPress, no Webflow
- Fixed price, no surprises afterwards
- Live in 4–8 weeks
I work as an official Shopify Partner and have built stores for clients including I Love Group, Art of Beauty by Maelyn and Bocca Coffee.
How to choose the right Shopify partner?
Regardless of whether you choose an agency or a specialist, pay attention to the following:
- Ask for references — not a portfolio, but clients you can actually call
- Check if they’re a real Shopify specialist — or whether they “also do WordPress”
- Ask for a fixed price — open-ended projects are a risk
- Ask who actually does the building — at agencies you sometimes work with juniors
- Check if they’re a Shopify Partner — that’s an official qualification
Conclusion
A Shopify agency is not inherently better than a Shopify specialist — and vice versa. It depends on the scale, complexity and budget of your project.
For most Dutch SME entrepreneurs who want a professional webshop built, migrated or optimised, an experienced specialist is the smartest choice: direct communication, honest price, fast delivery.
