Agentic commerce and Shopify: how AI agents are changing online retail
AI agents autonomously search and buy products. How does agentic commerce work and how do you make your Shopify store ready for it?
There’s a new type of visitor coming to online stores — one that doesn’t browse in the traditional sense, doesn’t scroll through category pages, and doesn’t compare based on photos. This visitor reads your product data, evaluates it against criteria, and either buys or moves on. It’s an AI agent.
Agentic commerce is the term for this emerging model: AI systems that autonomously search for products, compare options, and complete purchases on behalf of a user. And it’s no longer theoretical.
How it works today
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity “buy me the best wireless headphones under €150 with good noise cancellation,” the AI doesn’t just answer — it can now search the web, find products, compare them against the criteria, and in some implementations, initiate the purchase.
Shopify is one of the first e-commerce platforms to actively prepare for this. The Shopify Storefront API enables AI agents to browse product catalogues, check stock levels and create carts programmatically — without any human interaction.
How AI agents reach your products
This is the crucial question for merchants. AI agents don’t use Google in the traditional sense. They:
- Use large language models that have indexed the web (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude)
- Access structured product data via APIs and schema markup
- Read llms.txt files — a new standard that tells AI agents what a site is about and what it offers
- Use shopping integrations built into AI assistants
If your store isn’t visible to these agents, you miss out on this new discovery channel entirely.
Making your Shopify store AI-ready
Here’s what to focus on:
1. Rich, complete product pages AI agents can’t ask follow-up questions. Your product pages need to answer every possible question upfront: materials, dimensions, compatibility, use cases, return policy. Thin descriptions get skipped.
2. Structured data / schema markup
Structured data — specifically Product schema with price, availability, ratings and descriptions — makes your products machine-readable. This is already good for Google SEO; it’s essential for AI agents.
3. Speed AI agents often need to access multiple pages quickly. A slow store risks being deprioritised or timed out. Core Web Vitals matter more than ever.
4. Add an llms.txt file llms.txt is an emerging standard (think robots.txt but for AI) that tells language models what your site does and what it offers. Adding one signals to AI systems that your store is AI-ready.
5. Shopify Storefront API If you’re on Shopify, consider enabling and configuring the Storefront API. This is the technical layer that allows AI agents to interact with your catalogue directly — and it’s something Shopify is actively building for.
ChatGPT Shopping and Perplexity Shopping
Both ChatGPT and Perplexity now have shopping features. They pull product data from merchants and present results when users ask purchase-intent questions. Getting indexed in these systems is the new version of “ranking on Google page 1.”
The difference: traditional SEO is about text matching and backlinks. AI shopping is about data quality, schema completeness and structured content.
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
This is why a new discipline has emerged alongside traditional SEO: Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). Where SEO optimises content for search engine algorithms, GEO optimises content for language models and AI agents.
For Shopify merchants, GEO means: richer product data, better structured markup, faster load times, and content written to answer questions — not just to rank for keywords.
What this means for your store now
Agentic commerce is still early-stage but moving fast. The merchants who prepare now will have a head start when it becomes mainstream. Concretely:
- Audit your product descriptions for completeness
- Implement or improve Product schema markup
- Check your store speed (Google PageSpeed Insights)
- Add an llms.txt to your domain
- Consider enabling the Shopify Storefront API
